7 Website Terms You Should Know

Does it feel like your web developer is speaking a different language from you? Miscommunication about requirements can be a big source of disappointment in the web design process if the client and web person aren’t using the same lingo. In order to help guide your next website conversation, here are 7 website terms that you should know.

Responsive Design

Responsive design is a key element in making your website “mobile friendly.” It allows your website to look great on every mobile device and tablet by adjusting the resolution, screen size and format for that specific device. Responsive design is crucial in website development as Google is “dinging” sites that aren’t responsive in search engine optimization (more on this in a bit).

CMS

A CMS, or Content Management System has 2 main functions: a database for media, files and content and a a gateway to making changes on your website. The most popular CMS platform is WordPress because it is free, easy to use and constantly updated. We use WordPress exclusively in our web design and development because it is so user-friendly

Calls to Action (CTAs)

A Call To Action is anything you want the user to do. Each page on your website should have at least one CTA in the form of button, image or link that your user can click. One of the biggest mistakes in web design in forgetting to “ask” your users to do something, and just assuming they know what they should do. CTAs make it crystal clear and easy for your users to take action on your website which can help your conversion rates.

Domain

Your domain is the name that people type into their browser. For example, the 3Circle Media domain is 3circlemedia.com. Domains can have many different extensions such as .org, .us, biz but .com remains the most common domain.

Hosting

Hosting is where your website “lives” on the Internet. There are many, many different hosting plans out there, however, 3Circle recommends Managed WordPress Hosting to keep your website up to date and secure.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

In a nutshell, SEO are the practices that help your website get found, either in a local or global market. These optimization practices include keywords, meta descriptions, NAP listings (Name, Address, Phone Number) and links to your site from quality websites.

Above The Fold

This is the area of your website that is seen when a user first loads your site. This is one of the most important parts of your website as it is your first impression to your users. Make sure your Above the Fold images and text are visually engaging and concise with at least one CTA.

3Circle Media designs and builds responsive websites in the greater DC metro area for all types of businesses. Looking for a new website or a update to an existing site, contact us today.

5 Reasons Why You Need A Mobile Friendly Website

5 Reasons Why You Need A Mobile Friendly Website

A mobile friendly website isn’t just an option in 2016, it really is a requirement for many reasons. Here are just 5 reasons why you need a mobile friendly website.

1. Google search will be prioritizing mobile over desktop

Every year, mobile website viewing is becoming more and more the norm rather than the exception. In fact, mobile website usage has recently surpassed desktop for the first time ever. In order to keep up with this trend, Google just announced that mobile searches will be prioritized.  If your website isn’t mobile friendly and responsive, you will likely be missing out on business.

2. Google currently shows mobile-friendly results higher in search

Up until the beginning of September 2016, Google used to tag sites with “mobile friendly” if they were easily accessible for users on mobile devices. Recently, however, Google has removed that tag with the assumption that sites that are mobile friendly will automatically rank higher in results.

3. Mobile friendly websites add credibility to your business

First impressions are everything, even in web design. If your website doesn’t render well on mobile devices, potential customers see this as outdated and not modern. We live in a mobile first world and your business reputation could suffer with an outdated non-mobile friendly site.

4. Your customer reach improves

Every visitor that comes to your website and can’t access what they need is a customer lost. Many business large and small spend tons of money on marketing and customer acquisition but ignore their users’ website experience.

5. Customers can take action on your website any time, any where

We live in a time of instant gratification and instant actions, therefore it is of the utmost importance for your customers and potential customers to be able to interact with your website when the impulse strikes. If your website isn’t mobile friendly, there is a very good chance that customers will take their business to a competitor with a mobile friendly website.

If you are in need of a website refresh to make your website mobile-friendly, give us a shout. 3Circle Media specializes in mobile-first website development in the greater Washington, DC area.
